by lizgreen on 3 March, 2016

Tempers were frayed in the Council Chamber at Budget Council last night as the Conservative Administration forced through £12.5 million budget cuts for the year ahead.

Councillor Liz Green, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said,

“It just goes to show you can’t trust the Tories! They have broken their 2014 promise to freeze Council Tax increasing it by 2%. They voted down our amendment to save services and voted through £12.5 million of cuts whilst at the same time moving closer to selling off Council buildings.”

  • Over £1.5 million was slashed from the Adult Social Services budget for the year ahead with the Conservative Administration confirming their intention to swipe £138,000 from the Homecare budget for vulnerable people.
  • Achieving for Children will see a reduction of £1 million for the year ahead rising to £4 million over the next four years. The doors of Searchlight Youth Club, along with Devon Way and Barnfield are sadly set to close as £95,000 was slashed.
  • Conservatives also voted for a new budget of £2,000 for each councillor to spend in their ward
