20mph in Surbiton roads

by lizgreen on 25 January, 2016

Over 18 months after the initial public consultation over a 20mph in Surbiton town centre, consultation is hopefully going to start again.

The ongoing saga of getting safer streets in Surbiton is hopefully entering its last phase. In November 2014 the local Conservatives used a constitutional power to overturn the majority decision of Surbiton Neighbourhood Councillors to introduce 20mph in central Surbiton Roads including busy shopping streets like Victoria Road and Claremont Road.

On Tuesday 2nd February, Surbiton Neighbourhood Councillors will discuss consulting residents on implementing 20mph in Surbiton residential roads.

It has taken the Conservative run Council over a year to get in place the new consultation framework that allows this consultation to take place. I am delighted that the proposal now goes even further and includes all residential roads in Surbiton becoming 20mph. All residents in Surbiton will be asked their opinion, but the consultation is likely to take several months, due to reduction in traffic engineers to run the Council consultation.
