Here’s why the new recycling scheme is rubbish

by lizgreen on 4 February, 2016

20160204_154121Today I have had my new blue lidded wheelie bin delivered. I am fortunate that we have space at the side of our house to store it. We know that many do not have space.

20160204_153955 20160204_153859I’ve sorted my week’s recycling into the new categories. As the pictures show 2 nearly full green boxes with plastics, glass, tins and the blue lidded bin with paper and card.

So here is the problem – I will need 3/4 green boxes to store my plastic/glass/tins recycling for 2 weeks and it will take me probably over a month to even get close to filling my blue lidded bin.

I try to recycle everything we can, but do I want to have a mostly empty blue lidded bin (and the landfill bin is rarely over half full after 2 weeks) and 3 or 4 overflowing green boxes? It will be tempting to just put recyclables into the a wheelie bin on the night before it is collected!

We are an average family of 4, what happens when there are more in your house? How long will a single person take to fill a blue lidded bin that big? This is why I believe the new recycling service is not good for residents and needs to be reviewed as these flaws are obvious before it’s even begun.
