Fishponds Park gets Green Flag status

by admin on 26 July, 2012

The Green Flag Award scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK. It was first launched in 1996 to reward well managed parks and encourage others to achieve high environmental standards. Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status. Each site is judged on its own merits and suitability to the community it serves.

One of the most picturesque green spaces in Kingston, Fishponds Park is a designated local area of Special Character within Kingston. A specific Wetland Management Plan for the ponds has been drawn up and will enhance biodiversity.  Canbury Gardens in Kingston and Manor Park in New Malden also hold Green Flag status.

Our borough receiving three Green Flags this year is wonderful news. Kingston Council is very proud to receive these awards. I would like to thank all those involved, including our ground maintenance partners, Quadron Services, who continue to support the Council in conserving and improving our green spaces. We are very lucky in Kingston to have been recognised for three excellent open spaces that our residents and visitors continue to enjoy.

says Cllr Sharon Hartley, Lead Member for Sustainability and Green Spaces
