Kingston Council leads the way to reduce energy bills

by admin on 2 March, 2013

sharon big energy switchLib Dem controlled Kingston Council is leading a group of 20 London boroughs who have come together to help their residents find cheaper energy deals and improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

The Big London Energy Switch scheme is a free and easy way for all residents in the Royal Borough to become more aware of their energy usage and potentially get a better deal on their energy bills.

The Big London Energy Switch is funded through the Department for Energy and Climate Change’s (DECC) ‘Cheaper Energy Together’ fund. Each of the London boroughs involved are using their equal share of the £686,655 funding to work with their most vulnerable residents, who often struggle to keep their homes warm.

As more people are thrown into fuel poverty due to the rise in energy bills, we must do whatever we can to help Kingston residents get cheaper energy deals.  This is particularly important for the vulnerable and those on low incomes.  Of course the cheapest energy is that which you don’t use, so we are also helping people to reduce their energy usage.  See our page on ways to save energy.

says Cllr Yogan Yoganathan

The scheme works by building as large a group of residents willing to change suppliers as possible. As a group, much greater bargaining power is possible than there would be for any one individual, meaning a greater opportunity to negotiate with energy companies to secure lower prices.

Financial savings will depend on users’ current tariffs, consumption rates and the total number of people that sign up, but a trusted and experienced energy switching provider is used to ensure the best possible deal is achieved, with a fixed-rate tariff being offered at the end.
