Update to save weekly recycling

by admin on 10 December, 2014

The Conservatives in control of Kingston Council have plans to remove weekly recycling (except food waste).  At the Finance and Policy committee, they persisted in this folly which would see paper, card, plastics, glass and cans collected fortnightly.

I was surprised that all the Tory and Labour Councillors on the committee voted for it.  There has been no consultation with residents (but even their own market research showed it would be unpopular) and there will be no trial to see how it affects recycling rates.  Using their own figures, the reduction in income from recycling materials demonstrates that it will reduce recycling across the borough.

I have referred the decision to full council, so that all Councillors have an opportunity to vote on this vital and universal service.  If you haven’t yet signed our petition to keep all recycling weekly, please do so.
