Revised plans for Portsmouth Road cycle lanes

by lizgreen on 17 March, 2015

mini-holland portsmouth road plans

In January this year, Kingston Council launched a consultation on improvements to the cycle facility on Portsmouth Road from Brighton Road junction in Surbiton to the High Street in Kingston. This is the first of the mini-Holland projects.  The borough received over £30m funding guarantee from the Mayor of London in March 2014 to transform cycling provision.

Following feedback from Councillors, residents, cyclists and Kingston Cycling Campaign, the plans have been radically altered to provide much more segregation for cyclists.

I was delighted when we won the bid for this extra funding from Boris Johnson, whilst I was Leader of the Council. However, I was disappointed that in the plans announced in January they provided very little segregation, so would not lead to the kind of modal shift from cars to bikes that the project was looking to achieve.

These new plans are much better, and whilst still not fully segregated cycle lanes, they should make the cycle ride much more enjoyable and encourage the casual and family cyclist as well as the more professional.  Do get in touch and let us know what you think of these new plans.

says Councillor Liz Green, St Mark’s Ward Councillor

More details about the revised scheme for Portsmouth Road and the consultation report are available on the mini-holland Council website. Comments are welcome on this revised scheme before the decision at Council Committee in May 2015.

There will also be a presentation board in the reception area of Guildhall 2, Kingston Council, High Street, Kingston upon Thames KT1 1EU on display from Monday 23 March until Friday 10 April during normal office hours.

When the scheme has been implemented I think cycling on the road should be prohibited and speed limit possibly increased to 40mph Kingston bound. Kept at 30 going away from Kingston and both ways for the stretch near Palace Rd for the crossing and awkward junctions. Also more speed cameras are needed else speed limits virtually pointless.

Thank you for submitting a comment. You raise an interesting point on cyclists then using the road and speed limits. I’m not sure if it’s legal or desirable to have different speed limits in different directions on the same road. I do agree that speeds need to be monitored more closely as many currently don’t stick to 30mph and without cyclists the temptation to speed will be even more. I also hope that we’ll be able to enforce the no cycling on Queen’s Promenade better as a safe alternative has been provided.

David, I assume from your suggestion that you use Portsmouth Road purely for car travel. I lived for several years on one of the River Roads and frequently crossed Portsmouth Road to walk to and from Kingston on Queen’s Promenade. Being a faster road would separate the river from the nearby streets, make the river walk noiser and degrade the living conditions for people who live on the road itself. It’s not a great trade off for a faster trip by car for the benefit of people who don’t live in the area.

  2. Angus Low says:

I often cycle along this stretch of the Portsmouth Road and I am delighted to see that along the part I usually use I will be fully separated from the cars.
